UVB phototherapeutic modalities. Comparison of two treatments for chronic plaque psoriasis.
نویسنده
چکیده
BACKGROUND Combination UVB phototherapeutic regimens were introduced to improve therapeutic results and reduce cumulative UVB doses. OBJECTIVE Broadband UVB and UVB + bergamot oil (UVBB) therapies in the treatment of psoriasis were compared with regard to: efficacy, side effects, mean number of procedures, mean UVB dose, and duration of remissions. PATIENTS/METHODS One hundred and ninety three (193) patients randomly divided into two groups were treated: Group I with UVB monotherapy and Group II with UVB and bergamot oil (UVBB). RESULTS Overall assessment of the efficacy of the two treatment regimens demonstrated no statistically significant differences in either the post-therapy PASI values (t = 0.27, p = 0.786) or the duration of remissions (t = 0.22, p = 0.904). However, significant differences in the number of procedures (t = 2.3, p = 0.04) and the cumulative UVB doses were established (t = 3.4, p = 0.004). CONCLUSION UVBB phototherapy significantly reduces the UVB doses and the duration of treatment for psoriatic patients.

A Randomized Comparative Study Between Three Times And Five Times Weekly Phototherapy With NBUVB For Treating Chronic Plaque Type Psoriasis
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is estimated to affect 0.6% to 4.8% of the general population. The optimum number of NB-UVB phototherapy sessions is yet to be determined. The aim of this study was to compare therapeutic effects of NB-UVB in treating chronic plaque type psoriasis three times weekly vs. five times weekly. Materials and Methods: This study was des...
متن کاملA randomized, observer-blinded trial of twice vs. three times weekly narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy for chronic plaque psoriasis.
BACKGROUND The optimum treatment frequency for narrowband (TL-01) ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) in psoriasis is not yet known. We have previously found three times weekly to be preferable to five times weekly treatment in our population. OBJECTIVES To compare twice weekly with three times weekly NB-UVB phototherapy in chronic plaque psoriasis. METHODS In an observer-blinded, randomized comparison,...
متن کاملNon-invasive evaluation of tacalcitol plus puva versus tacalcitol plus UVB-NB in the treatment of psoriasis: "right-left intra-individual pre/post comparison design".
Photochemotherapy with psoralen plus ultraviolet A(PUVA) and phototherapy with UVB narrow band (UVB-NB) are used in the treatment of psoriasis. Numerous studies have shown that the additional administration of either topical or systemic antipsoriatic agents may effectively increase the efficacy of these therapies. This study aimed to compare through objective data the efficacy of topical tacalc...
متن کاملPhotometric and clinical assessment of localized UVB phototherapy systems for the high-dosage treatment of stable plaque psoriasis.
BACKGROUND Ultraviolet-B (UVB) light sources are widely used for the safe and effective treatment of inflammatory skin conditions. The recent commercial introduction of fiber-coupled UVB phototherapy systems facilitates the selective exposure and treatment of localized psoriasis plaques while permitting the safe use of high-dosage treatments. OBJECTIVE In this study, the performance character...
متن کاملEfficacy of psoralen UV-A therapy vs. narrowband UV-B therapy in chronic plaque psoriasis: a systematic literature review.
BACKGROUND Oral 8-methoxypsoralen-UV-A (PUVA) and Narrowband UV-B (NB-UVB or UVB TL-01) are well established treatments for chronic plaque psoriasis but there is limited evidence regarding their respective efficacy. OBJECTIVES To prepare for evidence-based recommendations concerning the practical use of oral 8-methoxypsoralen-UV-A and Narrowband UV-B in psoriasis, a systematic review to asses...
